Changes to Planning Timelines

The Government have announced that planning permissions which are due to expire between the start of lockdown and the end of this year will be extended to 1st April 2021.  This will give developers and the construction industry some time to catch up with commencements to secure permissions indefinitely.  However, for some, whose permissions expire towards the end of this year, this is not a significant extension and it may still be necessary to commence works on-site as soon as possible to protect permissions.

In the same announcement, the Planning Inspectorate (PINS) are to be given the ability to use more than one procedure simultaneously to determine planning appeals.  This should significantly speed up the decision making process and enable PINS to clear the backlog of cases it is experiencing as a result of the lockdown which has limited its ability to hold Hearings, Public Inquiries and complete site visits.
